How Old Should My Baby Be for Newborn Photos?

Welwyn garden city, St Albans, Potter Bar Newborn Photographer

One of the questions I’m asked most often by expectant parents is hhen is the best time to book a newborn photoshoot.

It’s a great question, and the simple answer is that the ideal time is usually when your baby is between 5 days and 3 weeks old.

However, if your baby is older than that, please don’t panic. There are many reasons why families may not be ready for photographs during those first few weeks, and beautiful newborn images are still possible.

Let’s take a closer look at the different stages and what you can expect.

Why Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken Between 5 Days and 3 Weeks?

Those first few weeks after birth are a rollercoaster of love, milk, hormones and baby snuggles.

During this time, babies are typically very sleepy and naturally curl into the positions they were used to before they were born. They tend to settle more easily, and are often happy to sleep through much of a photography session.

This is also when we see many of the tiny details that change so quickly:

  • Tiny fingers and toes
  • Delicate eyelashes
  • Soft spiky newborn hair
  • Those adorable curled-up poses
  • Sleepy, windy smiles that are unique to brand-new babies

For families who love classic newborn portraits, this age range is often ideal.

That said, every baby is different. Some babies are alert from day one, while others remain wonderfully sleepy for longer. Newborn photography is never about forcing a baby into a timetable. It’s about working around your baby’s needs.

What If My Baby Is Older Than Three Weeks?

Life doesn’t always go to plan.

Births can be unpredictable. Recovery can take longer than expected. Sometimes babies need extra care after delivery. Sometimes parents simply need a little time to adjust before thinking about photography.

Many babies are photographed successfully at four, five or even six weeks old.

At this age, your baby may spend more time awake during the session. Rather than focusing on sleepy curled-up poses, we often capture:

  • Beautiful eye contact
  • Stretching and movement
  • Tiny smiles and expressions
  • Family connections and cuddles
  • Your baby’s growing personality

These images are every bit as precious as traditional newborn photographs.

Cultural Traditions and Waiting to Leave the House

Many families observe cultural traditions that involve staying at home with a new baby for the first few weeks after birth.

In some cultures, parents remain at home for 30 to 40 days. Others may wait four to six weeks before visitors or outings are introduced.

As a photographer, I fully respect these traditions and understand how important they are to many families.

If your family observes a period of rest and recovery after birth, please don’t feel that you’ve missed your opportunity for professional photographs.

Some of my favourite sessions have taken place with older newborns. The photographs may look slightly different from those taken at ten days old, but they still capture the love, connection and wonder of this very special stage.

What If Mum or Baby Isn’t Feeling Well?

The wellbeing of both mum and baby will always come first.

The early weeks can be physically and emotionally demanding. Recovery from birth looks different for every mother, and some babies need a little extra time before they are ready for a photoshoot.

If you are feeling exhausted, recovering from a difficult birth, or your baby isn’t quite ready, it’s absolutely fine to postpone your session.

The goal is never to create additional pressure during a time that should be focused on healing, bonding and settling into life as a new family.

When you’re ready, we can create beautiful images that celebrate your baby exactly as they are.

Why Booking Your Photographer During Pregnancy Can Help

One of the biggest advantages of booking a maternity session is that you have the opportunity to build a relationship with your photographer before your baby arrives.

Many parents tell me they feel much more relaxed at their newborn session because we’ve already met.

By the time your baby arrives:

  • You’ll know what to expect
  • You’ll have seen how I work
  • You’ll feel more comfortable in the studio
  • You’ll know you’re in safe and experienced hands

Most importantly, your newborn session won’t feel like meeting a stranger during one of the most vulnerable and emotional times of your life.

Instead, it feels like returning to someone you already know and trust.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session?

The best time to book is actually during pregnancy.

Most parents reserve their newborn session during the second or third trimester.

Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly when your baby will arrive. We simply reserve space around your due date and then confirm the final session date once baby is here.

Booking ahead means you can relax knowing everything is organised before those busy newborn days begin.

Every Baby’s Story Deserves to Be Captured

While there is an ideal age range for traditional newborn photography, there is no such thing as being “too late” to capture beautiful memories of your baby.

Whether your little one is ten days old, six weeks old or somewhere in between, the most important thing is preserving this fleeting chapter before it passes.

The newborn stage is gone in the blink of an eye.

Tiny fingers become curious hands. Sleepy cuddles become first smiles, first steps and first words.

Photographs help us hold onto those moments a little longer.

So if you’re expecting a baby and wondering when to book, I’d love to chat and help you plan a session that feels right for your family.

Because every newborn journey is different, and every one deserves to be remembered.
