1st birthday Cake smash – what is it?
Over the years I have had so many friends, family members and clients asking me “what is a cake smash?” And to be honest 5 years ago (when I myself had a 1 year old son) I would have wondered the same thing. The concept of a cake smash is relatively new in the UK and like most things it has arrived from the USA where it is a big craze.
And the same thing is happening here in the UK, it is now one of my most popular photoshoots and has pretty much become my bread and butter, I think that the reason for this is that people are looking for a way to celebrate the 1st birthday of their child with a little someothing different; after-all a baby doesn’t care for a big party, that’s usually an excuse for us parents to have a get together and a couple of drinks 🙂
So a cake smash is a way to mark the birthday with something that the baby will like and you get to keep the photos for a lifetime.
So I take one baby, one cake, put them together and photograph the mess. It really is that simple.
Ok course, I have a studio all fully equipped with lighting, props and outfits, so the cake smash can be fully tailored to your likes. For example, I have clients who what the colour scheme of the cake smash to be the same as their child’s bedroom, so they can hang the photos in there.
Or I have other clients who organise the cake smash photoshoot for a month before the baby’s 1st birthday so that they have the photos for 1st birthday thank you cards or to decorate the birthday party venue.
As well as all of the above, another reason to have a 1st birthday cake smash is that it is fun. so much fun. Baby gets to have messy play and eat cake; and parents get to watch their little treasure make all the mess that they want (and not have to clear up after them!).
Personally I hold all of my cake smash photoshoots in my studio which is filled with lighting, props, backgrounds and outfits all designed to give my little clients a truly unique photoshoot.
So that’s what a cake smash is. you can see some examples on my gallery and below.
